Ganoderma lucidum in Traditional Use

Ganoderma lucidum, also known as reishi or língzhī, is often associated with longevity and inner peace in Eastern cultures.

Ganoderma and seasonal allergies

Since the age of thirteen, I have experienced symptoms of seasonal allergies in the early spring days, presumably to birch and hazel pollen. In my youth, I used medications for allergy symptoms (mainly loratadine and levocetirizine – I deliberately do not use brand names), which successfully alleviated the allergy symptoms. Feeling and looking great

My mom is 57 years old and has been diagnosed with mantle cell lymphoma. About a year ago, when very elevated leukocytes (over 70) were discovered, she was referred to the Hematology Department at Celje General Hospital. She waited a month for the examination, so I immediately started researching this field. I found a lot of information about Ganoderma. At that time, I called you and the lady advised me to use the tincture and the mixture of medicinal mushrooms. I ordered them right away and my mom started taking them.
When she finally went for her examination at the hematology department and had her blood taken, her leukocytes had already started to decrease. I believe the cause was Ganoderma and the medicinal mushrooms. Of course, they were still elevated, I think around 55. From then on, she has been regularly taking these two products. She regularly goes for blood tests. Sometimes her leukocytes do not increase at all, sometimes they increase slightly. Twice she was also given some medications. I do not know exactly what they were, but I know that after these medications her leukocytes immediately decreased. It is true, however, that since she has been taking this, everything has more or less stabilized. They increase slightly, but not excessively. Even her doctor could not believe the results. Reishi in Our Daily Routine

My name is Miha Humar. I work at a university, where I come into contact with a large number of people every day. The autumn and winter months are particularly demanding due to my heavy workload. In the past, I would catch at least one or two viral infections every year, usually during the winter. This left me feeling exhausted and drained of energy. In addition, I usually had to rely on medication just to get through that week. Many years ago, a colleague first told me about medicinal mushrooms and their use. At first, I regarded them as little more than another commercial gimmick designed to persuade me to spend money. In the autumn of 2007, after learning about scientific findings presented at the International Medicinal Mushroom Conference in Ljubljana and inspired by the enthusiasm of Andrej Gregori, I finally decided to give them a try. In the autumn of 2007, before the cold and flu season began, I started taking an ethanol extract of Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum). To my surprise, when spring arrived, I realised that I had not had a single viral infection that year. Based on my own experience, my wife and I both took the drops the following year, and neither of us became ill during the season. That same year, our four-year-old daughter started kindergarten. During the first few autumn months, she spent a great deal of time at home because of constant colds and one-day fevers. When Andrej Gregori told me that children also take Reishi extract, we decided to try it as a family. Once we started taking Reishi, our daughter was no longer ill. We usually mix the drops with apple juice, lemonade or a vitamin drink. At the same time, we are careful not to let the drops become a crutch, so we make sure to stay physically active, spend plenty of time outdoors, and eat lots of fruit and vegetables. Step by Step to Better Well-Being

In December 2008, I developed shingles (Herpes zoster). It appeared in an unusual location – on my left sciatic nerve (nervus ischiadicus). I attended a pain management clinic until the end of June 2009. The pain subsided only to the extent that I was able to walk without crutches, but not without pain. I could only climb stairs one step at a time. My treatment was completed in June 2009, but I was physically and emotionally exhausted, unable to do much more than walk around my apartment and the immediate surroundings. As I received no guidance from the medical staff on how to regain my strength, apart from being told that recovery from this condition takes a long time, I began looking for different ways to recover. In addition to massage therapy (which I paid for myself), exercises to restore movement in my affected leg, and taking large amounts of various vitamin B supplements, I also began regularly taking dietary supplements made from the medicinal mushrooms Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) and Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus). The latter is traditionally used in China for the treatment of damaged nerves. After just two months, my condition improved significantly. I still managed the pain with analgesic patches, but I needed them less and less frequently. By the summer of that year, the pain had almost completely disappeared. Today, I can walk on flat ground, climb stairs, hike uphill, cycle and run without pain. Only occasionally, when the weather changes, perhaps once or twice a month, do I use a pain relief patch. My name is Aleksandra Pivec and I am 37 years old. About fifteen years ago, I started experiencing problems and symptoms related to pollen allergy during the spring, which were quite bothersome. Is it true that products made from mushroom powders are less effective than extracts from the same mushrooms because they are not absorbed by the body?

Products in powdered form made from medicinal mushrooms differ from extracts primarily in their method of preparation and consequently in their composition. Each form has its own advantages.

At MycoMedica d.o.o., mushroom powder is obtained using low-temperature drying in order to preserve as broad a spectrum of bioactive compounds as possible, including those that are more heat-sensitive or insoluble, which could otherwise be lost or altered during the extraction process.

The powdered products therefore contain a highly comprehensively preserved mushroom biomass. In general, the body needs to invest more energy in the breakdown and absorption of powders; however, this form retains a broader spectrum of naturally occurring constituents.

Extracts are obtained from fresh mushroom material, as it contains protein and enzyme components that can be efficiently extracted using a suitably optimised process.

The process includes cold and hot water extraction as well as ethanol extraction across a wide concentration range. Through percolation – a process in which the solvent passes in a controlled and gradual manner through the mushroom material – we ensure an optimal extraction of a broad spectrum of naturally occurring water- and alcohol-soluble compounds from the biomass.

Through water extraction, water-soluble compounds are extracted from the mushroom cells, while ethanol extraction yields alcohol-soluble compounds. The extract is then concentrated at low temperatures and under reduced pressure, which reduces the risk of changes in thermolabile components.

Our innovative extraction process ensures a high-quality extract with a well-balanced profile of active compounds.

Can mushroom preparations really cause allergies?

Allergic reactions to mushroom-based preparations are rare. With long-term use of higher doses, more sensitive individuals may occasionally experience a mild skin reaction, such as itching, which usually resolves upon discontinuation of use or a reduction in dosage.

Can the concomitant use of medicinal mushrooms and other food supplements lead to contraindications?

In principle, there are no known contraindications in such cases. In any case, it is not advisable to take several food supplements at the same time, as this puts too much strain on the organism and may cause nausea. We suggest that you always take a break of at least two hours between taking two food supplements. We advise against taking vitamin C in addition to medicinal mushroom products.

Can I consume medicinal mushroom preparations all the time?

It is recommended to consume medicinal mushroom preparations for about three weeks twice a year. Longer periods of use are recommended for more prolonged problems, but with short breaks of a few days, which should be prolonged as the problem begins to subside. The purpose of medicinal mushroom preparations is not to be taken continuously but only as a kind of support.

Do your medicinal mushroom products need to be stored in a dark place? Your sales items are in dark bottles – is this necessary to maintain quality?

In principle, medicinal mushroom products are not sensitive to sunlight. It is more important to keep them in a cool, dry place. A dark bottle definitely helps to preserve the quality of the products.
