Frequently asked questions about medicinal mushrooms
Below we have prepared answers to your most frequently asked questions.
We bought the “Get Stronger” package (Mycomix®Immun & A-vir®Plus) from you. Please advise on its use: Should both preparations be taken at the same time and if so, – both in the morning or in the evening – or one in the morning and the other in the evening?
MycoMix®Immun and A-VIR®Plus can be used at the same time, taking into account the recommended daily doses for each product.
You can adjust the timing to suit your habits – we recommend taking the products with or after meals. The timing (morning or evening) is not crucial, it is more important to use regularly as directed.
MycoMix®Immun is usually used during periods of increased daily stress or when you want to add a variety of natural ingredients to your diet.
A-VIR®Plus can be included as needed to complement your daily routine.
Recommended use of MycoMix®Immun:
1 measuring teaspoon, once or twice a day, after eating with some liquid.
Recommended use of A-VIR®Plus:

How many mushrooms can we expect to sprout from one cubic metre of wood?
One cubic metre of wood can yield up to 64 kg of fresh mushrooms over a growing season of a couple of years.
Can the trunks I have inoculated with mycelium be outdoors in winter?
Trunks inoculated with mycelium from shiitakes, oystercatchers, winter parakeets, white oystercatchers and honeysuckles can be kept outdoors all the time, as these species are frost-tolerant. Ganoderma lucidum is sensitive to frost and it is advisable to protect the trunks inoculated with it from frost.
I have a basement room 8 x 2m, with a window and the possibility of lighting ( electricity ). I wonder how many mushrooms I could grow in it, assuming that it is an additional income and that I already have customers?
There can be about 2/3 of the stalls in a room, because we need space to walk between them. This means that in a room of dimensions 8m x 2m = 16m x 2/3 = 10.7 square metres of standing room. The racks usually have four shelves (the shelf spacing should be about half a metre), which means 10.7 x 4 = 43 square metres of functional space. Approximately 9 growing sets can be placed per square metre of shelving, which means that in a space of 8 m x 2 m, 9 x 10.7 x 4 = 385 growing sets can be placed on the shelving. One kit will grow about 0.7 kg of mushrooms over the entire growing season (which can last up to six months), which means that you can produce 385 x 0.7 kg = 269 kg of fresh mushrooms in half a year in such a space.
Do mushrooms need natural light or can artificial light be substituted?
Natural light can be successfully replaced by artificial light. However, mushrooms exposed to UV light have a much higher vitamin D content.
I would like to order an eco kit for growing shiitake mushrooms from you. I would like to know how long it takes for the first mushrooms to grow and approximately how long they take to grow (once, one week, two weeks…).
The rate of emergence depends in principle on the “maturity” of the substrate. In principle, however, the mushrooms emerge at room temperature within 14 days of opening the kit and reach their final size within a few days.
I would like to know the optimal conditions for the shiitake to rest between the first and second wave and whether the substrate needs to rest in the dark?
The substrate should rest at the same temperature at which the harvest took place. During the resting phase, it is recommended to lower the relative humidity to prevent mould. You can also reduce the ventilation of the room. In our experience, light does not have an excessive effect.
I use 35-kilogram PVC bags for mushroom reproduction. If I notice that green mold has appeared in the bag on straw on one side, and real mushrooms are growing on the other side, does such a bag have prospects or not?
Če je substrat na eni strani plesniv, to stran pokrijte na tak način, da se spore plesni ne bodo mogle širiti po zraku na substrat v drugih vrečah.
Mushrooms have already started to grow in the sterile bag in which you sell mycelium on grain. Do you throw these mushrooms away or scatter them on the straw along with the seeds?
You can safely mix small mycelium sponges into pasteurized straw, as mycelium will sprout from them again.
Does the straw that we soak, cook, etc. have to be wheat straw, or can it also be barley or some other grain?
In principle, wheat straw is more suitable because it is more airy, but you can also use other types of straw; oyster mushrooms even grow on hay.
I’m also curious if a UV lamp is required for artificial lighting or if it can be something else.
Conventional lamps are sufficient for lighting and additional lighting with a UV lamp is not necessary.
Hello, we started growing oyster mushrooms on straw at home and noticed that the mushrooms are growing really fantastically, but some mushroom sprouts the size of a slightly larger pin are drying up. Why? The conditions in the room are: Temperature 18-19°C, Humidity 80-90℅, Natural light poor, ventilation poor.
It is normal for some of the small mushrooms (mushroom germs) to dry up, as the mycelium does not generate enough energy for all the mushrooms to grow to their final size. You can see a similar phenomenon in fruit trees, when some of the fruit thins out and simply falls off the tree, because the tree does not have enough energy for all the fruits to ripen. We suggest that you manually spray the small mushrooms once a day and if they continue to grow, it means that the air humidity is too low, although I doubt it, as your relative air humidity in the room is only slightly too low.
My dog (allergic) ate the first bottle of Myco Dog Immune, and now I wonder if this can be given all the time or is it better to have a break in between?
After two months or less of taking mushrooms, it is advisable to take a break if possible – unless the problem is chronic, where a break should be carefully planned because of the potential for a relapse. If you are using them preventively, two courses of at least one month each year are recommended.
Do these mushrooms put any strain on the liver – in fact, my dog had elevated liver enzymes several times before using them?
Medicinal mushrooms have traditionally been used as part of complementary nutritional support in human and animal diets. Bioactive compounds in mushrooms are the subject of numerous scientific studies and traditional use,
where various aspects of their activity in the organism are being explored, including metabolic processes.
Since your dog has previously shown elevated liver enzyme levels, we recommend regular monitoring of laboratory values in cooperation with a veterinarian who is familiar with her medical history.
Do the ends of the trunks have to be protected with wax after the spawn is applied or can it just be wrapped with foil?
You can protect the ends of the trunks with foil only, but in this case you need to protect the trunk from sunlight, as the trunk gets very hot under the foil.
Does mycelium need oxygen to grow? I assume that the fungi need it for their growth and therefore need to remove the foil after overgrowth for their growth.
Mycelium needs very little oxygen to grow, so the film does not hinder its respiration and does not need to be removed from the stems. Over time, it will fall off on its own.
Can I grow mushrooms on logs indoors?
In the beginning, when the trunks are in the overgrowing stage, they can be kept in living spaces. Later on, when the fungi have taken over, it is better to keep them outdoors because of the spores they release into the environment. Large amounts of inhaled spores can cause allergies in humans.
Is it OK if I seal the mycelium on the wooden plugs in the hole in the trunk with a larger plug instead of wax?
It is best not to push the plugs deeper into the trunk, but to keep the end of the plug flush with the surface of the bark. Alternatively, the holes in the trunk can be much longer than the plug itself – this allows the mycelium to penetrate even faster. In our case, even with paraffin, the holes are not greased and the mycelium outgrows them well.
A year and a half ago, I bought mycelium on wooden plugs from you and applied it to the trunks of trees. Recently, some ‘strange’ fungi sprouted from them. Is it possible that the mycelium you sold me was dead? Why did the mushrooms whose mycelium I applied to the trunks not sprout?
Those “strange” fungi were probably already in the trunk before you introduced the mycelium. This sometimes happens with trunks taken from trees that are damaged, have cracked side branches or are old (trunk diameter greater than 30 cm). In such trees, many fungi are already present in the centre of the trunk, waiting for the day when the tree falls down and they start to sprout from it. It is very difficult to believe that the mycelium we have sold you is dead, because we grow it from cultures of known and regularly checked quality, we keep it at a low temperature all the time to prevent it from ageing and dying, we renew it, and it is always grown in completely sterile conditions to prevent contamination by bacteria or mould.
How much wood can I inoculate with one packet of mycelium on wooden dowels (300 dowels)?
With 300 plugs, you can make about a quarter of a cubic metre of wood.
How long do mushrooms take to sprout from their stems?
In our experience, beech trunks 40cm in diameter and 80cm long will produce mushrooms twice a year for up to eight years. However, this depends mainly on the type of mushroom you want to grow and the type of wood used.
Some sources also cite hardwood sawdust as a suitable substrate for mushroom cultivation. Would the substrate obtained from a branch shredder also work if it is boiled like straw, for example?
Hardwood chips are a suitable substrate, especially for oysters. However, the regrowth will be slower and the crop will take longer to establish, so care should be taken to ensure that the substrate does not dry out too much during the regrowth process.
How many fresh mushrooms grow from one cubic metre of wood?
One cubic metre of trunks produces a mass of fresh mushrooms equivalent to up to 20% of the dry weight of the wood over the entire growing season (which lasts several years). That is to say, one cubic metre of average wood (850 kg dry weight, which must be reduced by a third because there is so much space between the trunks) can yield 112 kg of fresh mushrooms (applies to beech oyster mushrooms).
After the renovation of the orchard, there are a few one-metre apple tree stumps left, which I consider suitable for mushroom cultivation. I was thinking of drilling holes in them (slanting upwards) and stuffing them with plugs of mushroom spawn. Do you think this is a suitable way to grow them?
We do not have good experience with the use of fruit tree stumps for mushroom cultivation, as they are often already cracked inside or resinous. If you do decide to grow mushrooms, we recommend you try beech oyster mushrooms, which have aggressive growth and will cope best with the situation.
Is there any chance that the fungi whose mycelium we have mycelialised on the trunks and placed in the garden will have any harmful effect on the fruit trees in the same garden?
The cultivated mushrooms whose spawn we produce and sell here are rot fungi, not parasites. So there is no need to worry about them attacking healthy trees in the vicinity.
Can I use a trunk that is already cracked to grow mushrooms?
No. A cracked trunk means that another fungus species has already overgrown it and will most likely prevent the fungus you are about to plant from growing on the trunk.
When is harvested wood best suited for mushroom cultivation?
In principle, wood harvested during the dormant season is preferable. It will yield a few percent more mushrooms. If you do not grow mushrooms on a large scale, the difference in yield will not be so great that you will have to choose and wait for the right time to cut the trees. We just graft the trunks when we have the wood to do so.
When is the best time to prepare the trunks for mushroom cultivation?
You can apply mycelium to wood at any time. If you use mycelium on cereal grains and apply it to wood before winter, you need to protect it well from rodents and birds, as they are very keen to eat it. When applying mycelium to wood in the run-up to winter, bear in mind that mycelium growth will stop during the winter months and resume in the spring. The overgrowth period will increase proportionately.
Can produce stored in the cellar have a negative effect on mushrooms grown in the same room?
If you store fruit or potatoes in a cellar and the room is not sufficiently ventilated, the gases emitted by the fruit can have an undesirable effect on the fungi, resulting in deformation of the hats.
I also wonder if growing mushrooms in the cellar could have any impact on other crops that are kept next to them?
The spores released by the fungi during growth may accumulate on the crops themselves, but in our experience they will not germinate or cause other damage.
If the trunks are cut into smaller pieces and the spawn is spread between them and assembled back together and protected with food film, I am not clear whether the film is wrapped only over this assembled area or over the whole trunk?
Protect the trunks only at the cut ends, not over the whole trunk. This is because you only need to prevent pests from gaining access and drying out the part of the trunk where you have ‘damaged’ it by applying mycelium to it.
I wonder if I can use medicinal mushroom supplements for my dog?
Dietary supplements made from medicinal mushrooms are increasingly being used in animal nutrition as a complement to a balanced and varied diet.
Numerous modern scientific studies and clinical trials investigate the activity of bioactive compounds from medicinal mushrooms, their characteristics, and their influence on physiological balance in the organism.
When used in animals, it is most important to follow the recommended dosages of each product and take into account the animal’s overall health status.
Your Cordyvit product is labelled as a vegetarian product. I wonder if this means that no animals were ‘used’ in the production process of this fungus and died in the process? Is the product entirely non-animal in origin and therefore also suitable for vegans?
Our Cordyceps is 100% vegetarian or vegan. No animals are used or killed in the production process.
Can the concomitant use of medicinal mushrooms and other food supplements lead to contraindications?
In principle, there are no known contraindications in such cases. In any case, it is not advisable to take several food supplements at the same time, as this puts too much strain on the organism and may cause nausea. We suggest that you always take a break of at least two hours between taking two food supplements. We advise against taking vitamin C in addition to medicinal mushroom products.
Can I consume medicinal mushroom preparations all the time?
It is recommended to consume medicinal mushroom preparations for about three weeks twice a year. Longer periods of use are recommended for more prolonged problems, but with short breaks of a few days, which should be prolonged as the problem begins to subside. The purpose of medicinal mushroom preparations is not to be taken continuously but only as a kind of support.
Do your medicinal mushroom products need to be stored in a dark place? Your sales items are in dark bottles – is this necessary to maintain quality?
In principle, medicinal mushroom products are not sensitive to sunlight. It is more important to keep them in a cool, dry place. A dark bottle definitely helps to preserve the quality of the products.
Can mushroom preparations really cause allergies?
Allergic reactions to mushroom-based preparations are rare. With long-term use of higher doses, more sensitive individuals may occasionally experience a mild skin reaction, such as itching, which usually resolves upon discontinuation of use or a reduction in dosage.
Is it true that products made from mushroom powders are less effective than extracts from the same mushrooms because they are not absorbed by the body?
Products in powdered form made from medicinal mushrooms differ from extracts primarily in their method of preparation and consequently in their composition. Each form has its own advantages.
At MycoMedica d.o.o., mushroom powder is obtained using low-temperature drying in order to preserve as broad a spectrum of bioactive compounds as possible, including those that are more heat-sensitive or insoluble, which could otherwise be lost or altered during the extraction process.
The powdered products therefore contain a highly comprehensively preserved mushroom biomass. In general, the body needs to invest more energy in the breakdown and absorption of powders; however, this form retains a broader spectrum of naturally occurring constituents.
Extracts are obtained from fresh mushroom material, as it contains protein and enzyme components that can be efficiently extracted using a suitably optimised process.
The process includes cold and hot water extraction as well as ethanol extraction across a wide concentration range. Through percolation – a process in which the solvent passes in a controlled and gradual manner through the mushroom material – we ensure an optimal extraction of a broad spectrum of naturally occurring water- and alcohol-soluble compounds from the biomass.
Through water extraction, water-soluble compounds are extracted from the mushroom cells, while ethanol extraction yields alcohol-soluble compounds. The extract is then concentrated at low temperatures and under reduced pressure, which reduces the risk of changes in thermolabile components.
Our innovative extraction process ensures a high-quality extract with a well-balanced profile of active compounds.
How long can I consume Cordyceps mushrooms continuously? They are very useful, but information on consumption varies widely.
We recommend three-week-old cows, that is, if there are no long-term problems that require prolonged consumption. In principle, however, our customers and the literature do not report any serious undesirable side effects from Cordyceps. Some report that after a prolonged period of consumption, the effect of Cordyceps on the body is reduced, so shorter periods of use are recommended.
Are Cordyceps capsules suitable for children (13 years, 30-35 kg) and if so, how many can be taken?
In principle, Cordyceps is also suitable for children over 3 years of age, that is, if they really need it. We recommend that it is only used for as long as it is really needed. The dosage can be calculated according to body weight, taking into account that an adult weighs approx. 60-70kg, and the recommended dosage of Cordyceps extract is 3 x 2 capsules per day.
