Products in powdered form made from medicinal mushrooms differ from extracts primarily in their method of preparation and consequently in their composition. Each form has its own advantages.
At MycoMedica d.o.o., mushroom powder is obtained using low-temperature drying in order to preserve as broad a spectrum of bioactive compounds as possible, including those that are more heat-sensitive or insoluble, which could otherwise be lost or altered during the extraction process.
The powdered products therefore contain a highly comprehensively preserved mushroom biomass. In general, the body needs to invest more energy in the breakdown and absorption of powders; however, this form retains a broader spectrum of naturally occurring constituents.
Extracts are obtained from fresh mushroom material, as it contains protein and enzyme components that can be efficiently extracted using a suitably optimised process.
The process includes cold and hot water extraction as well as ethanol extraction across a wide concentration range. Through percolation – a process in which the solvent passes in a controlled and gradual manner through the mushroom material – we ensure an optimal extraction of a broad spectrum of naturally occurring water- and alcohol-soluble compounds from the biomass.
Through water extraction, water-soluble compounds are extracted from the mushroom cells, while ethanol extraction yields alcohol-soluble compounds. The extract is then concentrated at low temperatures and under reduced pressure, which reduces the risk of changes in thermolabile components.
