Development of Mycelium-PLA Composites for Improved Mechanical Properties and Radiation Shielding Performance

In this study, we present a novel approach to the development of biocomposites, in which dried fungal biomass is used as a reinforcing phase within a polylactic acid (PLA) matrix. PLA serves as the primary matrix, while the mycelium functions as the reinforcement.

 

 

Various fungal species, including Trametes gibbosa (TG) and Ganoderma lucidum (GL), were integrated into PLA (a bioplastic derived from renewable resources such as corn starch or sugarcane. PLA is a thermoplastic and biodegradable material that serves as the primary matrix into which fungal biomass is added to enhance the mechanical and functional properties of the composite.) through extrusion. The specimens were prepared using injection moulding process (the fungal biomass and PLA were heated, blended, and forced under pressure through an extruder to obtain a homogeneous mixture suitable for further processing) for evaluation of mechanical properties .

Mechanical tests showed an increase in stiffness for most composites, whereas only the addition of Trametes gibbosa also improved material ductility (plasticity and elongation). Fracture analysis and DSC measurements confirmed that T. gibbosa particles were arranged in fibrillar structures, promoting a more ordered alignment of PLA molecules (higher crystallinity) and contributing to enhanced mechanical strength. Furthermore, the composites exhibited improved resistance after UVC radiation, with composites containing Ganoderma lucidum showing the highest level of protection.

The results indicate that incorporating fungal biomass into thermoplastic materials such as PLA not only enhances the mechanical properties compared to conventional mycelium-based materials but can also confer additional functional properties related to UV radiation resistance.
