Growing Mushrooms – Pest Management

How to grow mushrooms?

When cultivating mushrooms, various pests can affect the growth of mycelium and the development of fruiting bodies. Managing these pests is particularly important for outdoor cultivation, but also in indoor environments.

Outdoors, the greatest threat to mushrooms comes from slugs, which feed on the fruiting bodies and can cause significant damage. Their access can be limited by spreading sawdust, lime powder, or ash around the base of logs or stumps, as these materials make movement difficult for slugs. As an additional measure, beer traps can be used to attract slugs and reduce their numbers near the cultivation site.

Attention should also be given to small rodents, such as mice and voles, which are attracted to mycelium, especially when it is growing on grain substrates. Cultivating mushrooms in areas with a lower likelihood of rodent activity, as well as using physical barriers (e.g., protective mesh), can help reduce this risk.

Škodljivci

Indoors, the most common pests are flies, which develop in moist environments and can contaminate substrates or damage young mushrooms. The most effective way to control them is by using yellow sticky traps placed near light sources, as flies are attracted to light. Good hygiene, regular removal of waste material, and proper ventilation are also important to reduce conditions favorable for their development.

By regularly monitoring the cultivation area and taking timely action, most pests can be successfully managed without the use of aggressive chemicals.
