Growing Mushrooms – Mycelium Storage

How to grow mushrooms?
Publish date: 27.01.2026

Mycelium is the foundation for mushroom cultivation, so it is important to store it properly to maintain its vitality and quality. On this page, you will find guidance on how to correctly store mycelium in its most common forms, such as wooden plugs or grain-based substrates, along with recommendations regarding temperature and usage duration.

Forms of Mycelium

Mycelium is most commonly available in two forms:

  • Plugs (wooden plugs) – ready for direct inoculation of logs or stumps.

  • Grains or sawdust (wheat, buckwheat, barley) – used as a substrate for mycelium growth or for further inoculations.

.

Basic Storage Guidelines

  • Mycelium should not be exposed to direct sunlight or temperatures above 30 °C.

  • Mycelium must not be sealed airtight to prevent the growth of unwanted microorganisms.

  • It is best to use it as soon as possible, as its quality decreases with prolonged storage.

Recommended Shelf Life

Forms of Mycelium Refrigerator (4 °C) Room temperature
Plugs (wooden plugs) at least 3 months 1 month
Grains / Sawdust at least 1 month 14 days

Additional tips

    • Before use, always inspect the mycelium visually and by smell – healthy mycelium is white and free of moldy or rotten odors.

    • To prolong mycelium vitality, store it in a cool, dark place and protect it from direct contact with water.
