Edible and medicinal mushrooms can be cultivated on logs and stumps. The most suitable types of wood for mushroom cultivation are oak (only for shiitake), poplar, alder, beech, birch, willow, and hornbeam. Softwood or fruit trees should not be used. Fresh, healthy, undamaged logs or stumps are inoculated with plugs \u2013 wooden dowels colonized with mycelium.<\/p>\r\n

Holes are drilled in a zigzag pattern around the circumference of the logs according to the instructions, into which the mycelium plugs are inserted. The holes filled with plugs can be sealed with melted paraffin or beeswax to prevent contamination and reduce the loss of tree sap.<\/p>\r\n

However, directly melting paraffin or beeswax over an open flame can be hazardous, so caution is required. It is recommended to melt the wax using a double boiler.<\/p>\r\n

Place a container with paraffin or beeswax over a pot of hot water and melt it until it reaches the desired consistency.<\/p>\r\n

Use a brush to apply the paraffin to the logs, taking care to avoid burns.<\/p>\r\n
