Its unusual appearance has inspired admirers to give it a variety of descriptive names: lion\u2019s mane, monkey head, white beard\u2026 In Japan, it is known as <em data-start=\"503\" data-end=\"518\">Yamabushitake<\/em>, and in China as <em data-start=\"536\" data-end=\"551\">Shishigashira<\/em> (\u201clion\u2019s head\u201d) and <em data-start=\"572\" data-end=\"580\">Houtou<\/em> (\u201cmonkey head\u201d).<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"606\" data-end=\"625\">Traditional Use<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"627\" data-end=\"970\">Due to its favorable amino acid profile, this mushroom species has a high biological value compared to other edible mushrooms (e.g., champignons, oysters, and shiitake), making it a quality source of protein in vegetarian diets. In traditional Eastern medicine, it has been highly valued and is often described as \u201cn<strong>atural food for neurons.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"977\" data-end=\"1005\">Main Bioactive Compounds<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1007\" data-end=\"1050\">Active components of lion\u2019s mane include:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1052\" data-end=\"1954\">\n<li data-start=\"1052\" data-end=\"1187\">\n<p data-start=\"1054\" data-end=\"1187\"><strong data-start=\"1054\" data-end=\"1082\">Mushroom polysaccharides<\/strong>, mainly beta-glucans, among which HEP3 stands out as a pharmacologically interesting \u03b2-(1\u21923)-D-glucan.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1188\" data-end=\"1251\">\n<p data-start=\"1190\" data-end=\"1251\"><strong data-start=\"1190\" data-end=\"1206\">Phytosterols<\/strong>, primarily beta-sitosterol and ergosterol.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1252\" data-end=\"1831\">\n<p data-start=\"1254\" data-end=\"1831\"><strong data-start=\"1254\" data-end=\"1284\">Erinacines and hericenones<\/strong>: in experimental and in vitro models, these compounds stimulate the biosynthesis of nerve growth factor (<strong data-start=\"1390\" data-end=\"1397\">NGF<\/strong>) and influence catecholamine levels in the central nervous system (Kenmoku et al., 2002; Shimbo et al., 2005; Mori et al., 2008; Kawagishi et al., 2011). NGF plays a key role in neuronal survival, differentiation, and functional integrity. Due to these properties, <em data-start=\"1663\" data-end=\"1683\">Hericium erinaceus<\/em> is frequently studied in the context of neurodegenerative processes and nerve tissue regeneration (Kolotushkina et al., 2003; Mori et al., 2009).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1832\" data-end=\"1954\">\n<p data-start=\"1834\" data-end=\"1954\"><strong data-start=\"1834\" data-end=\"1875\">Essential minerals and trace elements<\/strong> (Zn, Fe, Se, Ge, etc.), niacin, biotin, vitamin D, and various polypeptides.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"1961\" data-end=\"1980\">Modern Research<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1982\" data-end=\"2222\">Over the past decades, numerous studies have investigated the immunomodulatory effects of <em data-start=\"2072\" data-end=\"2086\">H. erinaceus<\/em> polysaccharides and their influence in experimental models of tumor diseases (Liu et al., 2000; Lee &amp; Hong, 2010; Khan et al., 2013).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2224\" data-end=\"2378\">In laboratory settings, antimicrobial activities against methicillin-resistant <em data-start=\"2303\" data-end=\"2326\">Staphylococcus aureus<\/em> (MRSA) have also been reported (Kawagishi, 2005).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2380\" data-end=\"2693\">Additionally, research suggests protective effects on the gastric mucosa. Both clinical and experimental studies have examined the use of <em data-start=\"2518\" data-end=\"2538\">Hericium erinaceus<\/em> extracts in chronic gastritis and inflammation associated with <em data-start=\"2602\" data-end=\"2623\">Helicobacter pylori<\/em> infection (Xu et al., 1985; Yu et al., 1999; Abdulla et al., 2009).<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2700\" data-end=\"2748\">Clinical Study on GOBA\u00ae Hericium erinaceus K<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2750\" data-end=\"2940\">A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Primorska, using GOBA\u00ae <em data-start=\"2889\" data-end=\"2909\">Hericium erinaceus<\/em> K.
